When I talk to people these days usually one of the first things they ask me is, “How is your training going?” Frankly, I could go on all day about running but I wanted to answer a few questions that always seem to pop up in conversations with non-marathoners. To be fair, I would have asked most all of these questions only a few months ago.
Exactly how far is a marathon?
26.2. miles.
No, seriously. How far is it?
Twenty-six point two miles.
How long will it take you to run that far?
Personally, I’m shooting for around . . . → Read More: Marathon Q & A

Hiring a personal trainer can seem like something that is reserved for celebrities and the wealthy. However, if you budget your money and your time by seeing him or at an interval that works for you, it can be a tremendous boost to your fitness level. I’ve been with my trainer, John, for almost a year now, and I’m in the best shape of my life. Here are the reasons I strongly recommend personal training as a way to stay fit:
Accountability – Having a trainer keeps you honest. Knowing you will report back to someone who will know if you’ve been . . . → Read More: Reasons to Hire a Personal Trainer

You’ve all heard the schpiel. If you want to lose weight you can’t eat carbs. Atkins, South Beach, whatever. These diets claim to produce quick results by cutting out most or all carbohydrates. Truth be told, if you can manage to only knosh on veggies, eggs, meat and cheese for a few weeks you will most likely drop weight. However, you should also be prepared to put it all back on, plus some, the second you return to ranks of bread-eaters. (Unless, of course, you intend on foregoing pizza, crackers and toast for the rest of your . . . → Read More: To Carb or Not to Carb?

I am far from perfect. My bank account is negative. I leave the whites sitting in the washer for two days. I flag emails and don’t reply to them for weeks. I am late to birthday parties. And I am too hard on myself about things like this.
That’s why I run. I didn’t realize this for months of pounding the pavement, though. Last January I went out there because looking fat in photographs was just another problem I had. During the spring I ran simply because my trainer told me to. This summer, while training for a . . . → Read More: Why I Run

After last week’s chili I was in the mood to try another bean soup. I came across this recipe on Little Miss Foodie Two Shoe’s blog (the recipe was originally from the December 2008 issue of Gourmet magazine.) I decided to throw in some fresh carrots that we picked up at the farmers market and I think it made a nice addition. Also, since I like a bit more heat in my spicy soups, I added a few drops of hot sauce to my bowl and topped it all off with a dollop of sour cream and a squeeze . . . → Read More: Spicy Black Bean Soup

What are your fitness goals? For some people it may be something big like completing a triathlon or a marathon. Others may have a 5K in their sights. Maybe you want to lose 10 pounds, build muscle, gain flexibility or run one mile without stopping. Having a goal to work toward is important in order to stay on track. For me, I sign up for races. Before one is over I’ve already put the next one on my calendar. This way I don’t feel lost the day after crossing the finish line and I always have something new to . . . → Read More: Goal Setting

How do you stay motivated to work out? A lot of us have been there. You get the gym membership or the cute new running shoes and for a week or two it’s all business. You sweat it up every morning at 6am, or rock out every evening for a month until inevitably you hit a wall. The elliptical machine starts gathering dust and that 30 Day Shred dvd you so excitedly purchased is paused indefinitely somewhere around day thirteen. How do we break that cycle?
We all know that starting an exercise regimen is going to have it’s benefits. However, starting too fast . . . → Read More: Motivation? Anyone?

As the weather turns cooler one of the things I’m looking forward to is cooking hot soups and chili. After a summer of grilling everything outside it’s time to return to the kitchen. This weekend I whipped up a chicken and black bean chili with avocado, corn and chipotle for the kickoff of football season. Lots of fresh veggies, spicy peppers and as long as you don’t overload the cheese, good for you too! The tomato salsa with cilantro and lime was so good I could have spooned it up by itself. There was a lot . . . → Read More: Autumn: Time for Chili

A lot of times when I talk with non-runners about my training they react with something along the lines of “Wow, I could never do that.” My usual response is a positive sounding, “Of course you could!” or “If I can do it you can do it!” but I’m not sure if it really sinks in. I’m completely serious though. So let me say this again: IF I CAN DO IT YOU CAN DO IT. Though I have always been fairly active throughout my life, up until two years ago I had never considered myself an “athlete” and had . . . → Read More: Yes You Can
