It’s coming. All those holidays that are centered around food. And not just any kind of food, but rich, decadent, diet-demolishing food that is so hard to resist. It starts this weekend with the Halloween candy, and afterwards it’s all downhill from the Thanksgiving turkey and mashed potatoes to Christmas cookies, egg nog and New Year’s eve cocktails. I’m definitely not the type to deprive myself completely but there is something to be said for indulging a bit but keeping things within reason. This year I’m hoping to find a nice balance where . . . → Read More: Healthy Halloween? Sort of.

Looking for a training program that will help you build buff, sculpted arms? Me too. Then why not try out the 100 push ups challenge? Yeah, you heard me: One hundred consecutive push ups. It’s a six week program that trains your body to perform- say it with me now- One. Hundred. Push Ups. It starts simple enough. You take the initial test to see how many push ups you can already do and this determines which level of the program you should follow. Then, three days a week you perform the prescribed number of push ups with each . . . → Read More: 100 Push Ups Challenge

Attention runners! Just because summer is over doesn’t mean that there aren’t any opportunities to get out there and race. I know that everyone is dreading the upcoming treadmill season, but even in the cold weather there are still a few events to participate in that will hopefully motivate you to keep running even as the Wisconsin winter approaches. Below is a short list of Milwaukee area races to plan for through the end of December so mark your calendars, bundle up and let’s get going!

So I’ve been thinking a lot about the multiple small meals a day thing since I’ve been trying it myself and I wanted to pull together a short list of snacks that fall in the 100-200 calorie range. I realize that those 100-calorie packs are super popular but frankly, those things just don’t fill me up. I could probably eat 2 or 3 of them and still be hungry an hour later. Here’s my list of snack goodies that will actually get you through to your next meal and not break the calorie bank.

If you are trying to lose weight it can be tempting to skip meals in order to cut calories. However, this is a surefire way to slow your metabolism and hinder weight loss. By restricting calories too much your body will try to adapt to the sharply reduced amount of fuel it is receiving. Event
ually you may find yourself trapped in a situation where eating just the slightest bit more will cause you to gain weight. In addition, you run the risk of overeating when you end up starving after not eating all day.

One last marathon post from me (I promise!) so I can share some of the major things I learned from my experience training for and running 26.2 miles.
1. Find a local running club and participate in the weekly build-up runs. There are so many long hours of training you have to endure before you even get to the starting line and logging miles with the encouragement of others can be a lifesaver on those tough mornings. I remember my first group run I was so nervous to run with strangers but I met a group of fabulous . . . → Read More: First Marathon Lessons Revealed

Sometimes you just don’t have time to get to the gym, let alone go out and run for 10 miles. Just because you are stuck at home for the evening though doesn’t mean you have to veg out on the couch with a bowl of ice cream. One thing I do to remind myself to stay active even when I’m at home with the kids is to keep a basket of small exercise equipment in the living room by the television. Along with my yoga mat I have some hand weights, resistance bands and some tear-out fitness cards from . . . → Read More: Friday Tip
