, Today we welcome guest poster Marty Burian (a.k.a. @mjburian on Twitter) and his advice on how to achieve your fitness goals.
As it starts to get colder outside, I find myself spending more time thinking about my fitness goals for next year. This is a challenge to all of you to set (and meet) a few key fitness goals in 2010. Whether you are a couch potato or have already run a marathon or biked a century, you know there are things you wish you could do. The first step in meeting any goal is setting it. . . . → Read More: Fitness Goals: Tools for Success

Don’t worry, I’m not here to tell you to eat carrot sticks and celery this Thanksgiving. I do have a couple of tips though if you’re interested in enjoying the holiday food tomorrow but don’t want to go too overboard.
1. Have a plan and stick to your favorites.
Thanksgiving comes once a year and there are some foods that we don’t get many opportunities to eat any other time. If you’ve been waiting all year for your mom’s stuffing then don’t waste precious calories on crackers and cheese before dinner. You can eat those anytime! Starting a workout regimen when you are overweight can be very intimidating. The gym is full of fit, beautiful people in spandex sprinting swiftly on the treadmill and lunging their butts off. You may feel as though you don’t belong there or that people are staring at you. Don’t let that stop you, because everyone starts somewhere. Don’t wait until you are thin to begin!
What to wear: I like to look my best when I go to the gym. When I was a size 14 it wasn’t easy to find the cutest workout gear. Of course you don’t want to spend . . . → Read More: Working Out When You’re Overweight

How do you like to work out? Do you run with a group or exercise with a buddy? Maybe you’re the type to fly solo? There are benefits (and maybe some drawbacks) to each of these. Most people don’t always have the opportunity to exercise with a friend when it’s difficult enough to find the time to squeeze it in at all. Working out alone doesn’t have to be a burden though. It can actually be a great time to get inside your own head, release stress and focus on YOU.

Halloween may be over but that doesn’t mean it time to forget about pumpkins. Pumpkin is a low fat, low calorie vegetable that is great source of nutrients and antioxidants. What does that mean? Well it’s chock full of alpha and beta carotene which can help boost immunity. Research shows that people who eat more beta- carotene in their diet are less likely to develop certain types of cancer. On top of this it’s also a great source of fiber which can help digestion and even aid weight loss.

Are you looking for a way to incorporate some FUN into your workouts? Of course you are, and so are we!
A group of Milwaukeeans on a quest to have fun while working out has formed what they call “Pain in the Park”. The group meets at parks around the Milwaukee area and uses simple equipment, playgrounds, trees, and good old fashioned creativity to work up a sweat. They do a wonderful job of taking lots of pictures and describing the workouts very carefully, so wander on over to the Pain in the Park blog and check out what they’ve been up . . . → Read More: Pain in the Park

During the summer in Wisconsin, it’s easy to figure out what to wear: as little as possible. When the temps start to drop below 50 degrees, it can get a little more tricky. I ran in shorts and a singlet on an early October day at 48F. In that same temperature I’ve gone out in pants, a long sleeve shirt, vest, gloves, and headwarmer. I was dressed incorrectly for both occasions.
The 20 Degree Rule: Dress as if it is 20 degrees warmer than it actually is. You will be cold for the first ten minutes or so, but warm up . . . → Read More: What to Wear Running

Last weekend we were fortunate enough to have some new friends join our group run! Tracey and I were so glad to see new faces.
Krista was able to join us from Madison, Rochelle rode her bike over to meet up with us, and Mike came out for his best 9 mile run ever!
We run a route along the lakefront that is positively gorgeous.
We’re extending an invitation for YOU to come join us this Saturday, November 21st. Meet us at 8am in the parking lot in front of the Lake Park Bistro. We’ll be running 9 miles. In the future we plan . . . → Read More: Come Run With Us!

I’ve done quite a bit of running over the past year and it got me thinking about the company I keep during my runs. I am normally out there on my own, but there are rewards to running with others that can’t be beat. Check it out:
Running alone
You’ll probably end up running alone more than anything else. This is time for you, time spent thinking and winding down from a long workday — or if you’re an early riser, getting a perfect start to the upcoming day. When you run alone you can really listen to your thoughts. You get to . . . → Read More: Running in Good Company

Is the time change killing your workouts? I don’t know about you but this week really had a strange effect on me with the sun setting so early all of a sudden. It seems these past few days that by 5:30pm now all I want to do is curl up with a blanket and a good book. One of my favorite things over the summer was to run by the lake at sunset, but now unless I want to do this in the middle of the afternoon it looks like I’ll have to wait until spring. I’ve been mentally . . . → Read More: Mix It Up
