Post Holiday B-L-O-A-T

Ok, so the holiday weekend is finally over. After all the decadent sweet and treats from cookies to pie to that Christmas ham it’s time to survey the damage and get back on track. Stepping on the scale after days of indulgence can be a nerve wracking thing but I’m here to tell you it’s not as bad as it looks. I’m a frequent lurker on fitness message boards and I’m already seeing the panicked posts that read: “Oh no! I gained 5 pounds in TWO DAYS!” Or “How could I lose 10 pounds in 2 months and gain . . . → Read More: Post Holiday B-L-O-A-T

Ease Up A Bit, Eh?

This time of year it’s harder than ever to squeeze in a workout. In addition to it being freezing outside, there’s tons of shopping, baking, and stressing out to be done. Thinking about diet and exercise can be challenging in the middle of December. I tend to beat myself up a bit if I miss a scheduled run or if I snitch too much cookie dough from the mixing bowl. Why do so many people always give the gift of food at Christmas? Between all the cookies, fudge, and chocolate covered peanut brittle-y goodness it’s enough to make a . . . → Read More: Ease Up A Bit, Eh?

It’s cocktail season! This time of year is known for indulgence but there are ways to avoid blowing all of your calories on drinks if you plan accordingly and know what to ask for. In general it’s always better to eat your calories rather than drink them because our bodies don’t register fullness from fluids in the same way we do with food. Here are a few helpful tips for navigating those holiday parties:

A 1.5 ounce shot of hard liquor (vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, tequila… etc.) contains roughly 100 calories. Not too bad, but . . . → Read More: Cheers!

Running in Circles: The Pettit Center

I am kind of a wimp when it comes to bundling up to brave the cold weather. I was a summer runner that had to acclimate to running in 40-50 degree temps during our mild autumn. But when the weather starts getting near 30 degrees I change my tune. Especially when it’s dark and dreary out!

There is a solution that doesn’t involve running on the ‘dreadmill’, though. The Pettit National Ice Center. I checked out the Pettit last night and found out for myself just how appealing running in circles can be when it’s 12 degrees outside! I had a lot . . . → Read More: Running in Circles: The Pettit Center

Just Keep Spinning…

Stuck in a rut? Running mindless mile after mile on the treadmill and want to mix things up? Why not try a Spin Class? Spinning is a great way to burn tons of calories, challenge yourself and break up the monotony of the daily “dreadmill” run. I don’t know about you but day after day of doing the same exact thing begins to wear on me so I was very happy to take a stab at spinning last week at Bay View Fitness.

At every gym I’ve belonged to I have always been . . . → Read More: Just Keep Spinning…

The Road to Recovery: Interview with Bruce

If you’ve been running for a while without significant injury, consider yourself lucky. Every year, anywhere from 65 to 80 per cent of all runners suffer an injury. Bruce Dierbeck, (@btothed on Twitter) is one of them. Read on to see how Bruce dealt with a knee injury that kept him sidelined for most of the year.

So what’s your injury story?

In early June, I went for a jog along the lakefront. I didn’t stretch beforehand. There was a four to five mile routine I had come up with. The problem with it, though, was that a portion of it was uphill. . . . → Read More: The Road to Recovery: Interview with Bruce
