Fit Milwaukee once again welcomes guest writer Marty Burian as he shares his experience with using a heart rate monitor during workouts:
This post is both lengthy and contains a lot of information (read: math) that might be confusing. Please don’t let this deter you from learning how to properly use a heart rate monitor. If anything in this post is confusing, unclear or otherwise needs further explanation please post your questions in the comments. I will be happy to answer all questions and will do my best to provide clarification for anything that needs it.

Usually after I workout I like to enjoy something a bit sweet like a cup of yogurt. (Dannon Light & Fit or Yoplait Light are my favorites.) However, today I decided to jazz up my usual snack a bit. There’s nothing groundbreaking about making a fruit smoothie but I wanted to share my quick little recipe because it was tasty, filling and only 145 calories.
What I used:
1 6 oz container of Dannon Light & Fit Peach Yogurt- 70 calories1/2 banana- 50 calories1/2 cup sliced strawberries- 25 calories1/2 cup ice

After practicing with my trainer for months and making ugly, frustrated faces at the pull-up bar, all of the sudden one day I managed to do ONE solitary pullup. It took a while to get there. In fact, I began to think someone my size/gender/age was NOT meant to do one! However, I found out (after wasting a half an hour on YouTube) that all kinds of people can do pull-ups, including a 150ish-pound-nearly-30-year old woman like me!
How did I do it? I started from a squat and jumped with all my might, and all of the sudden I was lifting . . . → Read More: You Can Do A Pull-up

This weekend I decided to take a trip over to Invivo FItness–not only to check out the facility but also to try one of their (free!) Sunday yoga classes. First of all I have to say that this was place is a real treat. The gym itself is lovely. It’s a bright, open space with huge windows overlooking the Milwaukee River. Even on a crummy January day in Wisconsin the view and all the natural light that came with it was gorgeous. In addition to the traditional cardio room and yoga/Pilates studio they also have a spa where you . . . → Read More: Adventure: Ashtanga Yoga Class

What’s that you say? How did the marathon relay go? Well if you managed to avoid our bombardment of tweets and Facebook statuses this weekend I’ll recap a bit for you. First of all, the race was an absolute blast. Our two teams ran strong the entire 26.2 miles. Fit Milwaukee Team 1 had a finish time of 3:32:34 and Fit Milwaukee Team 2 came in at 4:04:01- 28th and 49th places respectively out of 68 teams. Not too shabby! Combined together we make two lean, mean, marathon running machines. What was so special about . . . → Read More: Marathon Relay Recap

Fit Milwaukee has formed two teams for the InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon Relay this weekend! This should be a fun event because while each person is out there running their leg of the 26.2 mile (95.4 laps) race, the rest of the team is around the track cheering them on.
If you’d like to come cheer for us, admission to the Pettit Center is free for spectators. The race is at 1pm on Saturday January 23. Dress warmly because the building is kept at a chilly 50-55F. You could also skate during the race! The Pettit Center’s skating oval will be . . . → Read More: Fit Milwaukee is Running a Relay!

Plateau: verb: to reach a state or level of little or no growth or decline, to stop increasing or progressing; remain at a stable level of achievement; level off.
When it comes to weight loss, a plateau is one of the most frustrating things you can encounter. If you’ve been experiencing success for a while, the arrival of the dreaded plateau can really knock the confidence right out of you and make you wonder why you continue to try so hard every day if you’re no longer getting results. After losing weight consistently, to start seeing the scale . . . → Read More: Break On Through

Have you figured out how to “cheat the system”? If you’re like me, you have probably tried! I’ll admit to considering the ‘all of one and none of the other’ approach. The thought of losing weight through only exercise sounds good to me! If you could eat whatever you want and still lose weight, imagine all the goodies you could mow through! Or diet alone but no activity? Sure sounds great to be lazy or use that extra time for more important things!
The truth is, we have to watch our calories in/calories out like balancing a checkbook. We all . . . → Read More: All Diet or All Exercise?
