Listen to Your Body

It seems simple enough: When something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. If you are hurt or sick the best thing you can do for your body is to take some time to heal properly. I’m not just talking about injuries but with illnesses as well. To illustrate my point, I’ve been “kind of” sick for a couple of weeks now. Nothing earth shattering- just your usual sore throat, congestion and lethargy. I’ve have high points and low points but or the most part I haven’t been 100% for just over . . . → Read More: Listen to Your Body

Injuries 101: Heel Pain

One of the first injuries I encountered when I decided to start running was something called plantar fasciitis. If you’ve ever experienced sharp pain in your heel when you get out of bed first thing in the morning then chances are plantar fasciitis may be the culprit. This pain is very common among runners but is another one of those injuries (much like shin splints or IT band syndrome) that can pop up if you participate in other sports or activities that emphasize a lot of pounding on the feet. You can also develop plantar fasciitis if you are . . . → Read More: Injuries 101: Heel Pain

Workouts with a Purpose: Training Schedules Explained

Now that Tracey has helped us with the training schedules, you might be looking at them wondering how you are going to follow them exactly each day. I’m here to tell you it’s ok if you can’t follow them precisely. You will be able to train better if you know why each workout is done and how it helps with your progression.

Buildups – You will see three workouts in a row. These are your bread and butter buildup workouts. They get your body used to putting lots of miles on it. You’ll see that these three aren’t the same . . . → Read More: Workouts with a Purpose: Training Schedules Explained

Game Plans: Half and Full Marathon Training

Spring is finally here (well, I hope) and that means race season is just around the corner! There’s only a few weeks left for those of you training for the Wisconsin Half Marathon on May 1st so hopefully your mileage is increasing at a steady pace. If you’re running the full 26.2 mile race that day, or later in Rockford, Illinois on the May 16th, I’m sure you already know the most intense long runs are coming up in the next few weeks. Many of you may already be following training plans but if you’re a first timer who’s . . . → Read More: Game Plans: Half and Full Marathon Training

The Importance of Planning Your Workouts

Like Tracey said on Monday, we either find time or make time to workout. Keeping up with fitness just takes a little bit of time each day, and if we plan accordingly we can fit it in. It’s all about seeing that workout in your agenda.Fail to plan, plan to fail – What a cliche! But in this case, it’s true. You are setting yourself up to quit or get injured if you are working out blindly. In order to get results from your workouts you need to follow some kind of plan or you . . . → Read More: The Importance of Planning Your Workouts

Eat Real Food: Community Supported Agriculture

Photos by The Bitten Word

All this talk of fresh summer recipes has me looking forward to Saturday mornings at the farmers market and feeble attempts at growing tomatoes in my back yard. (Topsy-turvy anyone?) This year though, my family has decided to try something new and buy a share in a Community Supported Agriculture farm (CSA for short.) CSAs provide weekly delivery of fresh produce during the growing season (around late May until the end of October). This means fresh, organic, sustainably grown vegetables all summer long straight from the farm to my dining room table. Sounds good, . . . → Read More: Eat Real Food: Community Supported Agriculture

You, Shoes. A First 5K Report!

Fit Milwaukee welcomes John Mosey – he tells all about his first race experience!

It is Race Day, my first race day since I got up off an extended stay on the couch and decided to start running. After training for months and pushing and running and planning for weeks, I wasn’t nervous because I didn’t really have goals or expectations. Breakfast with the race in mind. Get dressed with the race in mind. Go to sleep the night before with the race in mind.  One last check to make sure I knew were I was going, and when I had to be . . . → Read More: You, Shoes. Black Bean Hummus

Alison Sherwood here – I blog about learning how to cook and trying new things in the kitchen over at Post-College Kitchen.

The temptations of a good spread at a party can be a huge challenge for dieters and health-conscious eaters. It’s so easy to let loose and try every cheese-covered, bacon-wrapped or chocolate-drizzled treat on the table. There’s nothing wrong with sampling some delicious munchies – but if you’re like me, it’s hard to stop once you start.

I know a lot of people struggle with making healthy choices in social situations, so lately when I’ve had people over or brought a . . . → Read More: Black Bean Hummus
