You’ve probably heard all about this by now but Wisconsin’s statewide workplace smoking ban goes into effect on July 5th. Starting next week, all Wisconsin workplaces will be smoke-free- including all restaurants and taverns- and this lady here couldn’t be happier about it.
I’m not a smoker. I assume this upcoming change will be frustrating to those who are, but frankly I’m plain giddy about being able to go out to any bar in Milwaukee without having to wash my coat the next morning. Years ago I was able to tolerate cigarette smoke better because it was pretty much impossible to avoid . . . → Read More: Take a Deep Breath: Wisconsin Goes Smoke Free

I’m all about mixing up my running routes. Usually I gravitate towards the water, and end up along the lakefront near downtown Milwaukee. I live in Bay View so I run through South Shore Park and along the Oak Leaf trail into Cudahy and South Milwaukee.
But there is another trail I’ve been enjoying lately.
The Hank Aaron State Trail is ideal for bicyclists, walkers, runners, and skaters. It starts at Lakeshore State Park and runs east-west through Miller Valley! The well-maintained trail takes you through the third ward, past Potowatomi Casino, Miller Park, and rejoins the . . . → Read More: Discover the Hank Aaron State Trail

I’ve never had a session with a personal trainer before. (Well, until this past week. But we’ll get to that.) To be truthful I’ve always found it a bit intimidating. I mean, I’ve seen Jillian Michaels on tv. Do I really want somebody to scream and make me work so hard that I start to cry? Sure, I’m pretty darn fit but I know there are things I’m not so good at- and those things are exactly what I avoid doing when I’m at the gym. This is probably not the best way to get the most out of my time there, . . . → Read More: Personal Training For the Win

Do you find time to work out while traveling? If you’re the type of person that goes on trips focused on sports and outdoor activities of course that makes things easier. Hiking, rock climbing, swimming or surfing can offset all the extra food splurges being on vacation can bring. However, those of us who like to go on vacation to have our work cut out for us! I went on a mini-trip for a couple of days this week and though it took a bit of extra planning to squeeze in some activity, it’s really much easier than you may think.

Perhaps you’ve heard of speed work. You’re curious about it, but don’t know how to keep track of time. Well, if you have a Garmin, chances are you can create your own interval workout. Here’s how:
Hit the mode button.
Then, click Training>Workouts>Interval
You can select to do your interval reps based on:
Distance, Distance Rest
Distance, Time Rest
Time, Time Rest
Time, Distance Rest
You can also include how many reps you want to do AND if you want to include a warmup/cooldown.
The first time I tried it, I set mine up for 3 min run then 1 min rest for 10 reps with warmup/cooldown. Basically, when you . . . → Read More: Setting up intervals for speed work on your Garmin

We at Fit Milwaukee are, as Journal Sentinel reporter Erin Richards described, “a loosely organized fitness club”. People often ask me what they need to do to join our “club”.
You are probably already doing it.
Do you:
Stay active?
Take care of yourself?
Make new friends?
Talk to strangers?
Encourage others?
Make time for family fun and fitness?
Share your experiences?
If you answered yes to any of these, then you are a part of Fit Milwaukee.
For right now, FitMilwaukee.com is indeed very loosely run, with the posts being populated by a few friends who like to write about what we’re . . . → Read More: You Are Fit Milwaukee

We may have a new tradition on our hands! The Great Milwaukee Race inaugural year was a huge success! We are so glad you all came out to play on such a perfect day. The scavenger hunt caused quite a commotion downtown! We even got a mention in the Journal Sentinel!
At the start, teams received an envelope of clues, a list of bonus challenges, and a map. Some teams sat down before they left and plotted their route, and some took off straightaway to the first clue they solved. When they arrived at . . . → Read More: The Great Milwaukee Race: A Great Success!

Wow, what a great day for a great race! Forty-nine teams competed on a beautiful (although HOT) Saturday morning, racing like mad through downtown Milwaukee solving clues, playing games and having fun with friends. Thank you so much to all those who participated as well as to all of our fabulous volunteers. We already have tons of ideas on how to make next year’s race even better. For our first year we are pretty pleased with how everything turned out, but be sure we’re also taking into consideration the many tips and suggestions we’ve received from all of you. . . . → Read More: Great Milwaukee Race Results!
