Virtual Running Buddy #8

This week’s questions are about foot pain and training intensity. Thanks to all who have sent questions in, please keep them coming!

Question:
Sometimes when I run multiple days in a row the arches of my feet are really sore and other times not. Is this a matter of crashed out shoes, or bad socks or just tired feet? Can I pre or post stretch to help them feel better?
- John

Answer:
I want to be really careful here, and state that the best advice I can give you is: SEE A DOCTOR.

It is possible that this feeling could come from . . . → Read More: Virtual Running Buddy #8

We’ve got spirit, yes we do!

Here on Fit Milwaukee we talk a lot about running- more specifically long distance running. While we realize that running a marathon isn’t necessarily on everyone’s fitness radar, you can’t deny that the idea of running 26.2 miles can be pretty fascinating. Even for someone who has competed multiple marathons, there’s something about the distance that never ceases to mesmerize and inspire. Well, here’s your chance to learn more about marathons, while enjoying a movie and helping a group of local runners raising money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America:

Virtual Running Buddy #7

This week we tackle running mantras and whether it’s better to run on a treadmill or outside. If you have a question that we haven’t addressed yet, make sure to send it in.

Question:
I am very new to running; I’m active (I play soccer, I hike, I do yoga, I go to the gym, etc) but I can’t seem to run for any length of time without getting bored or getting side cramps. As a beginner, should I be running on a treadmill (I can run farther/longer but slower on the treadmill) or around the indoor track/outside (I . . . → Read More: Virtual Running Buddy #7

Trying to stay positive in a sea of setbacks

Knee. Ankle. Knee. Foot. Ankle. Foot. Shoulder. Foot. Knee. Foot. Foot. Rib. Foot.

I have had so many setbacks in my training and journey to health. It seems like each time I take one step forward, something sets me two steps back.

I have worked hard to not let this affect me but, to be honest, it tears me up. I’ve tried to put up a strong front. I’ve tried to be nonchalant about it all. I’ve had some moments of public disappointment about my injuries and setbacks. Mostly, I’ve tried to convince myself it was ok.

Truthfully, it’s been blow after blow after . . . → Read More: Trying to stay positive in a sea of setbacks

Pedal the Pack

Are you a Packer fan? Are you into cycling? Well, a fun new class called Pedal the Pack at the South Shore YMCA has found the perfect way to combine the two. Yep, it’s just what it sounds like: an endurance ride throughout the entire football game. What a cool way to cheer on your team and get an insane workout in! And why not burn hundreds of calories instead of consuming them during the game for a change? (Don’t worry you’ll get a chance to take a breather at halftime where everyone is encouraged to bring snacks and water in order to . . . → Read More: Pedal the Pack

Deadline extended, again for FitMke Indoor Marathon Relay team registration

Remember when I said we were extending the deadline for registrations to join the FitMilwaukee crew at the InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon Relay? Well, we’re doing it again.

Fit Milwaukee will keep registration open until October 27 at 5 p.m. We already have 30 people signed up and we want to keep the field open for two more months so that everyone who might be interested has a chance to sign up. Plus, we want to have the most teams there.

You don’t have to be an advanced runner to participate. We have runners registered with paces from 6:45/mile to . . . → Read More: Deadline extended, again for FitMke Indoor Marathon Relay team registration

Women to Watch: My Milwaukee Running Heroes

We all need a little inspiration from time to time. Recently I talked about not comparing yourself to other runners, but instead looking to them for inspiration and taking pieces of their training that you hope to apply to your own. Here are just a few local women I’ve had my eye on to do just that. I aspire to stay dedicated, inspired, honest, grateful, and passionate in my running like these women.

Squish Squash

I’ve been lamenting the end of summer lately but this past week I decided to snap out of it and begin embracing all the things I love about autumn. Apple orchards, the leaves turning colors, running without being drenched in sweat, and finally: Fall Food!  Last year around this time I posted a spicy black bean & chicken chili recipe that I made to kick off the football season. After revisiting that recipe once again over the weekend (YUM), I find that I’m now fully ready to embrace the warm, comforting foods of autumn. I’m especially looking . . . → Read More: Squish Squash
