Running gets a lot of glory. It’s a personal and physical triumph that friends can rally around. You can’t just jump in and do it. There’s planning and training and running through bad weather and recovering from injuries and getting up at dawn. Running is measurable by miles and races and paces and medals and marathons. There’s a clear winner, certain improvement, and the numbers pile up if you stick with it.
Will Smith recognizes that running is one of the keys to life. He says when you hear that little voice telling you to stop, but you don’t… you’ve found the . . . → Read More: Running Gets All The Glory

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of streakers… Runstreakers, that is! Runstreaking is a name to describe the habit of running every single day. Several dailymilers are doing this unique workout plan.
It’s simple: Run every day. You set the rules. Does a mile count? Does a half mile count? Does run-walking count? A runstreak can be whatever you make of it! Just keep track of your mileage somewhere so you can see the runs pile up. Each time you log a workout you log the day of number consecutive runs you’re on. Runstreakers can try to make . . . → Read More: Runstreak: Run Every Day!

For those of you that have never heard of the “Spoon Theory” by Christine Miseradino, I encourage you to go to her website and read it. Then come back. It’s okay. I’ll wait.
This is the part where you visit Christine’s site, read the Spoon Theory, and then come back. Go! (And then come back!)

The first time I read that piece, I cried. Hard. Someone had put into words exactly what frustrates me about my medical shenanigans. Each day I have a fixed number of spoons to use, and I have to plan my life around that. Along . . . → Read More: Reconstructing a Beer Runner: Spoons.

After an extended hiatus, a new Virtual Running Buddy question was submitted this week. This one deals with breaking in custom shoe inserts prescribed for Plantar Fasciitis. If you have a question you would like answered, please send it in.

I’ve been struggling with Plantar Fasciitis for months. I just got a pair of custom inserts and I’m wondering if you have any suggestions for what to do during the break-in/getting used to hard plastic in my shoe period?
- Amy

Luckily, I’ve never had a need for orthotics, so I don’t have any first-hand experience to share. However, I . . . → Read More: Virtual Running Buddy #14

Nick Melchi, captain
Running since: May 2010
Miles run per week: Around 30, give or take 10
Favorite place to run: Anywhere outside, though I’ve grown quite fond of the Lake Geneva countryside which is where 90% of my runs take place.
Proudest running achievement: Running in the Chicago Half Marathon in September of this year.
Jessie Moore
Running Since: Technically 2005, though not seriously until Spring 2010
Miles run per week: ~9-15 – Ideally on the high end of that. Unfortunately, I’m currently injured and am taking a few weeks off in the hopes of healing up. I wasn’t injured when I registered for the relay! It’s frustrating.
