One of my goals this year is to broaden my fitness vocabulary. More simply put: I want to mix things up a bit. Looking back at 2011, I was very proud of reaching my high mileage goal but the months where I had more variety in my workouts I felt like i was happier overall. For the past couple of months I’ve been peppering my schedule with dance classes, boot camps and yoga, and my body has been loving me for it.

Last week I headed out to Mequon to check out a little place called Velocity Cycling Studio. I’ve only ever taken once Spin class in my life so I figured this would be the perfect thing to try out in my newer, more varied workout schedule. Velocity opened this past summer and is a pay-as-you-go Spin studio. It’s ALL cycling, all the time. There are no memberships so you only pay for the classes you take (there’s also a 30-day unlimited ride package for $75 if you really really love Spin a lot!) Plus, your first ride is always FREE.
I’m sure all you cycling aficionados already know that this workout is no joke! After mere minutes my quads were burning and we were just getting warmed up. On this day we did an interval workout so there where periods of super high intensity followed by a short rest in-between. (Wow the rests felt good!) I really appreciated the constant motivation from the instructor and the loud pumping music to keep me fired up. She kept telling us how “great” we all looked but I’m finding that statement highly suspect. I know that I FELT good by the end though so that’s what counts.
For those of you that live on the far north side or Milwaukee suburbs a place like this could work well for you. I attended a noon class and the room was full of people who worked in the nearby office building who popped over for a quick lunch workout. As for me, I left feeling incredibly energized and ready to tackle my afternoon.
Do you have experience with Spinning? What do you like about it?

I think you’ll find spin to be as addicting as running! I’m currently doing PT for a running-related (knee and foot) injury and spin has been a great cardio alternative. I’ve grown to love it so much that I signed up for the Scenic Shore 150 bike tour this summer. While I still consider myself a runner, getting excited about a new sport has been essential to maintaining my mental and physical motivation while I rehab!
I can totally see how it’s addicting. I feel like it’s another thing I want to conquer. Have any extra hours in the day you want to share?
I WISH they had a location on the south side! I have been looking for a pay-as-you-go spin studio vs. a gym membership I’d use solely for spin classes.
