Right now I’m in the process of planning out my summer. Although there are tons of events that I’m looking forward to for myself, I’m also wondering what on earth am I going to do to occupy my kids for three whole months? Every spring my mailbox is filled with brochures for summer camps, day camps and classes to choose from. The trick is to narrow it down to what they *really* love so I don’t end up wasting money on classes they’ll end up not liking- summer camps aren’t cheap, amiright? So when I heard about a new . . . → Read More: Bike Kids Wisconsin

The Birky Challenge is a 67 mile memorial bicycle ride in Fond du Lac to honor fallen Police Officer Craig Birkholz, badge #67. (This course also has a shorter loop of 40 miles)
Both routes will be on paved roadway and will have 3 rest stops with Gatorade, water, fruits, vegetables, cookies and of course donuts. There will be professional bike mechanics along the route to help with any problems that might occur. The course will be clearly marked out and will have a Police Motorcycle lead out. Bike helmets are mandatory, no exceptions!
Admittedly, this is not a Milwaukee event, but one . . . → Read More: The Birky Challenge – June 4th, 2011 8am

Are you a Packer fan? Are you into cycling? Well, a fun new class called Pedal the Pack at the South Shore YMCA has found the perfect way to combine the two. Yep, it’s just what it sounds like: an endurance ride throughout the entire football game. What a cool way to cheer on your team and get an insane workout in! And why not burn hundreds of calories instead of consuming them during the game for a change? (Don’t worry you’ll get a chance to take a breather at halftime where everyone is encouraged to bring snacks and water in order to . . . → Read More: Pedal the Pack

Fit Milwaukee welcomes guest author Meg McCulloch. She’s been biking to work and shares with us a cautionary tale.
When you find yourself sitting on a curb at 6:30am halfway between your place and work, a point where you aren’t sure you want to carry your bike back, you realize that you probably weren’t quite as prepared as you thought you were. After a quick phone call to my business partner, I’m told my problem will be solved in 15 minutes, but until then I have some quality curb time to think about what I’ve done. Or rather, what I didn’t do.

I started a new job last week, and it’s close enough that I can bike to work! I gave it a test drive 3 out of 5 days last week and here’s what I’ve discovered:
Slow down
Even biking at a leisurely pace only takes a bit more time than driving there. Studies have shown that trips of less than 3 miles are often quicker by bike. It takes 10-15 minutes to bike the nearly 3 miles to my job. When I drive, it takes at least that long (by the time I find parking and walk to the building). 10 minutes of . . . → Read More: Bike to Work: What I Learned in a Week

I’m in a running funk. I don’t want to run, not even a few miles. I don’t even want to think about running. When I do run, I just think about how miserable it is and how long I’ve been gone and how long til I’m home and what torture it feels like. I dwell on how awful I am at running and how I could be using this time to do something else and how I’ll never get faster so why try? I’m sick of all my routes and tired of doing the same thing all the time.
Depressing, right? Stinky . . . → Read More: Running Funk: When you don’t want to run

Fit Milwaukee welcomes Sherry Wilde and she shares her first triathlon experience. You can find her on Twitter as @sherrywilde.
If you would have asked me four years ago to go for a run, I would have chuckled, grabbed my book, and taken a seat while you went for your run. I was not a runner, or much of anything that involved exercise. I might throw in a work out DVD once in a while or go for a walk around the neighborhood on a nice day. But given the choice, I would prefer to do anything but exercise.
Then my husband and I . . . → Read More: My Journey from Couch Potato to Triathlete

It’s getting hot out! It’s good to always have a source of water when planning long runs. If you run near the lakefront, or in Bay View, there are lots of fountains marked off on this map. If you have some of your own to add, please let me know in the comments! I’d love to have a more comprehensive guide to hydration in the Milwaukee area.

I’m all about mixing up my running routes. Usually I gravitate towards the water, and end up along the lakefront near downtown Milwaukee. I live in Bay View so I run through South Shore Park and along the Oak Leaf trail into Cudahy and South Milwaukee.
But there is another trail I’ve been enjoying lately.
The Hank Aaron State Trail is ideal for bicyclists, walkers, runners, and skaters. It starts at Lakeshore State Park and runs east-west through Miller Valley! The well-maintained trail takes you through the third ward, past Potowatomi Casino, Miller Park, and rejoins the . . . → Read More: Discover the Hank Aaron State Trail
