Work out to Eat? Eat to work out?

Some people exercise in an attempt to lose weight. Some people do so simply to stay healthy and fit or because they love the way it makes them feel. And then there are those who work out because of a llittle something called guilt. We feel guilty about eating whatever-kind-of-food-comes-on-a-stick this year at the State Fair so we hit the treadmill or the elliptical machine for an hour the next morning. Or better yet, we work out like mad in advance so we can allow ourselves to enjoy the aforementioned food-on-a-stick. Over the years I’ve found myself falling under . . . → Read More: Work out to Eat? Eat to work out?

Post Workout Fuel: Chocolate Milk

A lot of times when I’m in the middle of a tough workout or a particularly long run, I start to focus on what I will get to do once I am finished- or more specifically what I get to eat and drink. The very first thing you need to do after a long workout is to start replacing fluids and electrolytes. I usually chug a bunch of water first and then maybe follow it up with some Gatorade. But the real treat for me is chocolate milk. Apparently a combination of carbohydrates and protein is best for your muscles when they . . . → Read More: Post Workout Fuel: Chocolate Milk

Free Subway Breakfast – Saturday July 3rd!

After a morning run last week, I was famished. My sister and I headed to (gasp!) McDonald’s for breakfast. What!? It’s the first place I think of. I know, it’s a not the healthiest choice. But after we ordered our grease and sat down, we kicked ourselves as we realized there is a Subway less than a block from where we were! And Subway has breakfast now!

Looking at their menu and nutritional info, I see that their selections sound tasty (like this western egg and cheese) AND make a lot more sense than the McSkillet . . . → Read More: Free Subway Breakfast – Saturday July 3rd!

Deconstructing Cravings

Fit Milwaukee welcomes Holistic Health Coach Lisa Sarnowski as she fills us in on the origins of food cravings.

When was the last time you had a food craving? Do you love them or loathe the thought?

The body is an amazing machine. It is always there for you, breathing, blinking, pumping blood, digesting food and striving to maintain homeostasis (balance). Do you think this reliable bio-computer is making a mistake by craving certain foods? Of course not! At least I don’t think so.

I also know that cravings are not created due to lack of will-power or . . . → Read More: Deconstructing Cravings

Finding Balance: Body Image

Guest blogger Nora Lahl is a beginning runner and self proclaimed foodie living in Bay View. She is also running her first 5K this weekend! Go ahead and check out her blog, Foodie Gets Fit.

This NY Times article reminded me of a recent post from Tracey about how to raise kids with a healthy body image. While it’s never a perfect science, it’s pretty clear that a parent, especially a mother, can have a huge impact on her daughter’s self-perception. So here we are, adult women, dealing with our flawed perceptions of ourselves while trying to suppress . . . → Read More: Finding Balance: Body Image

You Say You Want A Revolution?

Have you been watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution? I’ve been watching with mixed feelings of frustration and fascination. Having been a fan of Jamie Oliver since his days as “The Naked Chef,” I was excited to find out about his new project in the town of Huntington, West Virginia. Apparently, after hearing that Huntington was rated by the CDC as the “Unhealthiest City in America,” Oliver decided to move into town (with his camera crew) and over the course of three months helped educate the community on the benefits of eating fresh, healthy foods over packaged and processed junk. . . . → Read More: You Say You Want A Revolution?

C is for Coffee

All this talk about being calorie-conscious while eating out has got me thinking about another area that tends to trip people up: Coffee drinks. Don’t worry, good old-fashioned black coffee is still calorie-free. I’m talking about something like those awesome blended coffee beverages with the big pile of whipped cream on top. Whether your poison is a cold, iced mocha or a foamy cappuccino keep these tips in mind while ordering if you don’t want to smash your daily calorie budget:

Make the shift to skim milk. As someone who used to be a barista in college, I . . . → Read More: C is for Coffee

Eating Out- A Diet Nightmare?

A lot of people think that eating out means certain death for your diet. As person who considers herself a “foodie” I know it can be hard to balance a love of food with the desire to still fit into your jeans the next day. Of course, maintaining a good exercise regimen can offset occasional splurges but dining out doesn’t always mean that you have to kick good eating eating habits to the curb. Here are a few helpful tips to get you through a restaurant meal without all the guilt while not sacrificing taste:

Don’t skip meals during the . . . → Read More: Eating Out- A Diet Nightmare?

Eat Real Food: Community Supported Agriculture

All this talk of fresh summer recipes has me looking forward to Saturday mornings at the farmers market and feeble attempts at growing tomatoes in my back yard. (Topsy-turvy anyone?) This year though, my family has decided to try something new and buy a share in a Community Supported Agriculture farm (CSA for short.) CSAs provide weekly delivery of fresh produce during the growing season (around late May until the end of October). This means fresh, organic, sustainably grown vegetables all summer long straight from the farm to my dining room table. Sounds good, right? The CSA we chose . . . → Read More: Eat Real Food: Community Supported Agriculture

Black Bean Hummus

Alison Sherwood here – I blog about learning how to cook and trying new things in the kitchen over at Post-College Kitchen.

The temptations of a good spread at a party can be a huge challenge for dieters and health-conscious eaters. It’s so easy to let loose and try every cheese-covered, bacon-wrapped or chocolate-drizzled treat on the table. There’s nothing wrong with sampling some delicious munchies – but if you’re like me, it’s hard to stop once you start.

I know a lot of people struggle with making healthy choices in social situations, so lately when I’ve had people over or brought a . . . → Read More: Black Bean Hummus
