1. How long have you been running?

On and off, but mostly off, since 8th grade. I never really ran competitively until three years ago. I did run a few 5ks and the Shamrock Shuffle in the mid-1990’s, but, I was really, really slow. In 2009, I ran 3 -5K races. In 2010, I ran 5-5K races. In 2011, I stepped it up a bit and ran 3-5K’s, 3 Half Marathons and the Chicago Marathon.

2. If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?

My absolutely favorite place to run is Siesta Key Beach. It’s amazing running on the beach. No distance is ever too far there.

3. What other activities do you do to stay in shape?

I do a few P90x dvd’s, ride horses, and occasionally bike to stay in shape.

4. What is your favorite piece of running gear?

My shoes!! I finally got fitted for shoes and what a difference it makes to my feet and my knees. No more blisters.

1. How long have you been running?

I wouldn’t say I have been running as much I would say I started working out about 1.5 years ago. After losing over 100 lbs, I am now able to run again.

2. If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?
Through the countryside of New Zealand

3. What other activities do you do to stay in shape?
I workout at a crossfit gym

4. What is your favorite piece of running gear?
My ipod

Jeff D.

Jeff D.

1. I began running the last week of August 2011 after being involved in a gasoline explosion, surgery, and then teaching my legs how to walk again. Prior to that i ran competitively in high school and college for four years till i broke my foot skateboarding which ended my collegiate partial scholarship.

2. The world is full of beautiful trails and i want to run them all.

3. Just about anything that involves being outdoors : hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, mountain biking. My work as a construction contractor and carpenter keeps me very physically fit.

4. The shoes on my feet that help absorb the pounding i put them through.

We’re getting excited for the Indoor Marathon Relay and we have another team to introduce to you! Meet Team Choco Taco Liberation Front!

Amy Kant

Amy

I first started running because my some people I met through Twitter run and I wanted to try it and to get to know them better. Turns out, I really enjoy it. I continue running to lose weight and to spend time with my running buddies, who’ve become some of my best friends in the entire world. It also doesn’t hurt to travel the country for races! It gives me an excuse to go places.

The first race I ever did was the Brown Deer Run. I was very nervous. I had never done a 5k before. I was training for a half marathon, so I figured I should probably do a 5k first. The weather was crappy, but it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I ran the race with a new running bud, Rachel, and met up with a bunch of other friends before the race. My new running friends all waited at the finish to cheer me on! I had such a sense of accomplishment when I crossed that finish line.

My favorite piece of running gear is my compression sleeves. They’re so much easier to put on than compression socks (which is a godsend after a race). I’ve also found them helpful during long runs.

My perfect run is on a cool, sunny day along the lakefront, Oak Leaf Trail or on the trails of Lapham Peak. No music, just me and nature. There’s something very peaceful about running alone in nature!

Alicia Hansen

Alicia

I started running to spend time with my friends who are runners. Now I not only run with friends, but I make new friends from running. But it’s not just the social aspect of things. I’ve also discovered that I enjoy racing. I truly enjoy trying to beat my own time. And when I’m not trying to PR, I’m enjoying the scenery. I love that running is taking me to knew places and meeting new people. It’s just plain fun.

My first race was the Race into the New Year a State Fair Park in 2009, I think. I was worried about running outside, but the day ended up being sunny and warm, for the end of December in Wisconsin. My goal was to finish with about a 10 minute pace and I met my goal. The best part, though, were all the great people running the race with me. Some of them were already friends, but for others, the race was just the beginning of developing friendships. Overall, it was a great experience.

Favorite piece of running gear? Oh, tough question. I’m going to have to go with capri’s. I love the mix of function and fashion. I feel good in them and they are great for those days when the weather is in between.

My perfect run is on a cool, fall, weekend day. It’s sunny and the middle of the day. I’m running through Estabrook Park then down the Oak Leaf trail. It’s the perfect mix of nature and people there.

Jen Hermes

Jen

Why do you run? It’s something to do

Talk about the very first race you ever did. Jingle Bell 5K Run in Madison, WI, in 2010. Took the Couch to 5K Challenge and made the run in 29 minutes and 22 seconds

What is your favorite piece of running gear? iPod shuffle

Describe your perfect run... I love to run in HOT weather. I love to sweat hardcore when I run, so cold-weather running is not for me. A late afternoon or early morning run at the peak of summer is perfect.

Jessie Madsen

Jessie

I run for lots of reasons, but mostly because it feels good. I love the breeze on my face, I love how my legs feel when they’ve been moving for hours. I love the scenery. Sometimes I love when running makes me lose weight, but that’s the least of it. I run for the solitude and the quiet. I run to listen to a great playlist on my iPod. I run to pray. I run to think, and to not think. I run because I can.

My very first race was the Run Rock and Roll 5K that a friend of mine put on for charity. The course wasn’t marked very well, and I was in between the running and walking packs, so I missed a turn and didn’t even do the whole 5K. Years after that, I ran a Jingle Bell Run, then the Lake Country Half Marathon, and from there I was hooked.

My favorite piece of gear is currently my Garmin Forerunner, but that might just be because it’s new. I almost never leave the house without my handheld water bottle, though. Love that thing, especially during crowded races where they run out of water.

My perfect run was on the Glacial Drumlin Trail. I decided to run a new, untested segment, and wasn’t even sure how far I was running until I got home and mapped it (over 13 miles!). Weather was a perfect 50 degrees, I had a new playlist, and I got to enjoy some new scenery. Plus, my legs felt great, due to a forgiving run-walk ratio.

You bet, but my selections are a bit odd…my faves are -
1) The Adverts – One Chord Wonders (old school British punk)
2) Bad Brains – I (more punk, this time from DC)
3) Jerry Reed – Eastbound and Down (I’m sorry, it cracks me up every time plus “we’ve got a long way to
go and a short time to get there” fits)
Honorable mention – spaghetti western and NFL Films soundtracks, Dropkick Murphys, surf
instrumentals.

4. What other activities do you do to stay in shape?
Cycling – I’m really more of a cyclist than a runner. I don’t race but I bike commute, do century rides, go
on bike tours with my wife Kathy and have done the Riverwest 24 hour ride for the last three years.

Pat Pringle

Pringle at Discovery Run 2011

1. Tell us about the very first race you ever did. -
I ran the 880 and mile in school but I consider my first run to be the 2000 Lakefront Marathon.

2. What is your favorite piece of running gear? –
socks

3. Do you listen to music when you run? –
I listen to the rhythm of my feet, breathing and heart. When all is well it’s a pretty good groove. Name
three artists or songs that fuel your runs.

4. What other activities do you do to stay in shape? –
“Running after my three children and weights not necessarily in that order

Michael Ellis

Ellis at Lakefront Marathon, 2010

1. Tell us about the very first race you ever did.
It may have been a Trailbreaker ½ marathon in the early 2000’s. It was a pretty chilly day with temps in
the lower 30s and I really had no idea what I was doing. Showed up with cotton lined sweats, a cotton
turtleneck under a heavy cotton sweatshirt and started sweating like a pig within the first two miles. I
finished, but more importantly learned quite a bit about proper attire that day.

2. What is your favorite piece of running gear? –Lakefront Discovery Run always delivers with excellent
shirts (this year’s I thought was particularly good) but I’ll always cherish the shirt from my first
marathon, 2007 Lakefront.

3. Do you listen to music when you run? – It’s pretty rare that I don’t listen to music when running, but
I use running as a means to relax so I don’t necessarily listen to stuff to pump me up but more so to set
a mood. I listen to Ryan Adams, Wilco, Gomez & Amos Lee a fair amount and my iPod’s also blessed by
the presence of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr so I can mix things up a bit.

4. What other activities do you do to stay in shape? – I keep telling myself I should expand horizons
and do more cross training but running’s pretty much it for me. Although I guess I do a fair amount of
swimming with my kids.

How long have you been running? – I guess I have been running probably since I could walk. However, I really don’t like to run. But, it definitely keeps me healthier than sitting on my couch, and it’s faster than going to the gym. So it’s been about 2 years now since I got moving.

What is your favorite place to run? — I enjoy the Milwaukee lakefront, although I don’t get there enough. I like my neighborhood (Jackson Park) a lot, it’s easy for me to keep track of my distance and speed. And I get to say hi to my neighbors. I also really like the Pettit in the winter, because I a) have a deathly fear of slipping on ice on the sidewalk, b) love that it’s 30 degrees warmer in there than outside in January, and c) like the people watching as they skate by me

What is your favorite Milwaukee running event? — I love running Bastille Days, to me it’s a great opportunity to see the city in a different way. The 2009 run was also my first “race” since 8th grade. And maybe, just maybe, I like the fact that I end up having a bunch of beers before (and after and sometimes while) I hit the streets .

Do you listen to music when you run? Name three artists or songs that fuel your runs. – I listen to music on my runs, unless I’m running with someone where we can chat between my gasping for air. My playlist varies quite a bit, for the Summerfest Half Marathon, I played a list of 1 minute snippets of around 130 songs, just to keep my mind moving along with my legs. My playlist must haves are Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Steel Panther, and recently LMFAO.

On January 21, 2012, the Unfrozen Caveman Runners will take their revenge upon the Pettit National Ice Center. Vowing to crush their previous marathon relay time of 3:21:36, the cavemen (and women) can be observed flying around the track, bellowing their mighty battle cries as they run in pursuit of their destiny.

First, run an ultramarathon. I’m thinking about doing the Ice Age 50-miler in May. It sounds just crazy enough to work. Second, qualify for Boston. This was first on the list, and it’s still important to me, but I’m trying to put less pressure on myself in 2012. Third, a destination race with friends. Hood to Coast, NYC Marathon…I’m up for anything out of the Midwest.

I’m sort of a purist when it comes to running with music. I know it helps some people fuel their runs, but I only use it as a last resort if I have no other motivation to get out the door. It takes away control I have over my pacing and thoughts. Plus, I run a lot at night and don’t want to get mugged.

If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?

I would love to run through the English countryside or in New Zealand so I could pretend I was a hobbit.

What is your favorite piece of running gear?

Hmmm. I’d have to say my Garmin because I can hardly remember my running life before it. I also really love my compression socks a lot.

Name the top three items on your running bucket list.

Run a half or full marathon overseas, Hood to Coast with these jokers, and run a distance longer than 50 miles (did I just say that?). Honestly, I just want to be able to run for as long as possible in my life. I want to be the old lady who rocks half marathons in her 70s and wins age group awards at races.

Do you listen to music when you run? Name three artists or songs that fuel your runs.

I usually listen to indie rock like The Mountain Goats or the Decemberists, but part of me still loves pop music like Kelly Clarkson and the sulky fifteen-year old likes the occasional Nine Inch Nails track. Oh, and I also love to listen to podcasts. Dan Savage and Ira Glass are my favorites and make the time fly by. (Yes, I know this was more than three things.)

What will be your battle cry as your sprint down the home stretch at the Pettit?

OOGACHAKA!

Caveman: Jordan Henkel

If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?

For some reason, I would find it interesting to run on the Great Wall of China.

What is your favorite piece of running gear?

My iPod. I notice a difference in runs with music compared to those without.

Name the top three items on your running bucket list.

Run a sub-4 marathon in 2012, Hood to Coast, and a race just for fun outside of North America.

Do you listen to music when you run? Name three artists or songs that fuel your runs.

I listen to music whenever I can. Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, and Eminem are commonly heard, and beneficial.

What will be your battle cry as your sprint down the home stretch at the Pettit?

WHYYYYYYYYYYY.

Cavewoman: Rochelle Van Hart

If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?

If I could run anywhere in the world, it would probably be Ireland. Running by a castle? Yes, please:)

What is your favorite piece of running gear?

My favorite piece of running gear is hands down my Garmin. We have a love/hate relationship sometimes, but I’m lost without her. Yes, her.

Name the top three items on your running bucket list.

1) the New York Marathon, 2) a trail ultra marathon, and 3) Hood to Coast with my friends!

Do you listen to music when you run? Name three artists or songs that fuel your runs.

I don’t typically listen to music when I run, unless I need something to get me out the door or I’m racing. My iPod is an insane mix. Lately, I’ve really been digging old Motown tunes.

What will be your battle cry as your sprint down the home stretch at the Pettit?

RAWR!!!!!!

At the end he let me cross the line first because I actually trained for the race and he just entered to have fun.

1. My first race was a 5k in Greendale in 2004 called the Root River Run. I still have the tshirt! I remember just wanting to run the whole thing… but I had to walk about halfway through. Then I fell off the running wagon for a long time, until 2008 when I ran a Turkey Trot 5k in Bay View. That Thanksgiving day race is now an annual tradition and celebration for me.

2. I love my pink North Face half-zip. When the time comes for winter running, I’m so happy I can pull that out of the closet. It’s bright and pink and happy and I wore it for one of my favorite races ever, the Lakefront Marathon, which I ran with my bestie Krista, who also happened to be wearing bright pink. It was awesome.

3. I listen to music on about half of my runs… I love 311 all the time, any time, (Beautiful Disaster) but I also like a little heavier/faster stuff like AFI (The Killing Lights), as well as one of my favorite guilty-pleasure artists of all time: Madonna (Ray of Light).

4. I like biking in the summer, ice skating in the winter, and strength training all year round. Having a personal trainer keeps me accountable to mix things up instead of just running all the time!

1. First tri was the Danskin women’s triathlon. I kind of signed up on a whim after being talked into it by a friend. I am a swimmer originally. Started swimming competitively at age 9 so I figured why not do a tri. I knew I could bike the 12miles or whatever, but the run scared me. I was not a runner or so I thought. I did 1.5 seasons of high school track as a sprinter and really didnt like it. I went into the tri thinking it would just be fun. It was so much fun that I signed up for another one. And another one and another one.

2. This is a hard one, but I think it is my Nathan handheld water bottle.

3. No. I stopped listening to music sometime earlier this year. I’m not sure why. I just stopped. Although I was never someone to always run with music.

4. I think about swimming. I like biking.

1. The first race I ever ran was the MPS Run Back to School 5k. I was SO NERVOUS because I had never done a race before, so I had no idea what to wear, what to expect, or how I would do. But, I ran with a friend of mine, who was also running her first race, and we made it through together!

2. My compression arm sleeves. They are so great to wear when I’m not sure if it’s warm enough to go without sleeves, and yet if I get too hot, I can peel them off and shove them into my Fuel Belt. (My Fuel Belt is definitely in a very close second place to the arm sleeves.)

3. I tend to listen to podcasts. I love NPR’s “Car Talk” and “This American Life” podcasts and I also listen to Dan Savage’s “Savage Love” podcast. When I was training for Lakefront Marathon, I also listened to NPR’s “Fresh Air” every now and then. When I do listen to music, I choose the They Might Be Giants station on Pandora, or I listen to Ben Folds or, sometimes, the Gipsy Kings.

4. I love to bike because it’s something I can do with my whole family. I also love yoga, particularly Bikram Yoga, as well as weight training and walking.

I took part mainly because they included the option to “trot,” aka “walk,” aka “not run.” The trot took place along the Mississippi River on campus, and my friends and I really started doing it as a way to hang out, do something good, and, of course, feel less guilt when we went out for milkshakes afterward.
2. My skull candy ear buds – those babies stay in place no matter my pace. Hey, that’s a great line. They should pay me for this!
3. “Yes, I most certainly do! For short runs I listen to music, for long runs I listen to books on tape. I started with “”I am America and So Are You”" by Stephen Colbert, but that made me die with laughter and was bad for my breathing. I’ve now switched on my long runs to listening to sermons. Weird, I know, but I love it.

For motivating music when I’ve got to pick up the pace, I’d say:
The Show by Hawk Nelson
Pain by Jimmy Eat World (has a great tempo)
And most anything by Green Day

I also play a great game during football season that helps increase my endurance with minimal pain. If I can find a treadmill and a TV, I’ll run whenever the GB offense is on the field (including through commercial breaks…no cheating here) and walk when the defense in on the field (including through commercial breaks…fair’s fair). It’s a 3-hour exercise and I’m so involved in the game I don’t even realize.
4. Not as much as I should?

Seriously, though, usually 30 Minute Shred by Jillian Michaels

I also simply like walking throughout my neighborhood. I meander through the blocks and I plan my future landscaping and curb appeal for if I ever own a home.

We’d like to highlight YOUR Indoor Marathon Relay team!

Captains, ask your team 4 questions to get to know them, and compile their answers along with photos and captions and send to anne@fitmilwaukee.com.
