Earlier you met Hayley, who is running the Rock ‘n Sole Half Marathon at Summerfest. Now it’s time to meet one of our Quarter Marathon runners: Amy Hackbarth!
When was your first race? Tell us about it!
Amy and her mom/training partner, Mary Weltzin, who is running the 5K at Rock 'N Sole.
My first race was the Lifestriders race in March. It was a 5k trail run. The event was not timed but I did time it myself to get an idea of how I was doing. My goal was to finish it without walking. I ran (jogged) the whole way! It . . . → Read More: In Training: Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Quarter Marathon

It’s pretty well known these days that mud runs and other adventure races are kind of the “it” event right now. Some popular ones include the Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race and Dirty Girl. This summer though, there’s a new event taking place on the Milwaukee riverfront that will be making a big splash. (Pardon the pun.) The Tribal Challenge is calling itself an “untamed triathlon” and looks to be putting its own spin on the obstacle-course-style race.
The three parts to this 15-mile adventure triathlon include biking, running and paddling. More specifically, it’s 5 miles of paddling downstream, followed . . . → Read More: The Tribal Challenge: An Untamed Milwaukee Triathlon

What a great group of entries we had for this contest. I’m honestly inspired by all the beginner runners out there- whether you’re new to the sport or coming back to it after a a prolonged break or an injury. It was only four years ago that I started out on this crazy journey myself so I’m especially excited to see newbies discovering the joy, adrenaline, (and slight obsession) that comes with being a runner. So without further ado, here are the winners of the free entries to the Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Quarter Marathon and 5K.
I decided to number all . . . → Read More: Giveaway Winners!

Meet the first of two Milwaukee runners representing FitMKE at the Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Half Marathon in June!
Name: Hayley Wolf
Occupation: Special Events & Marketing Coordinator, Arthritis Foundation
Year you started running: 2010
Do you have a training plan for the Rock ‘n Sole Run? Tell us about your approach.
I follow a structured, but flexible training schedule. I find that it works best to schedule runs week by week. When I begin training, I will make a complete schedule leading up to the race, with 3 or 4 runs scheduled per week, but I am flexible about which days those runs take place. . . . → Read More: In Training: Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Half Marathon

Hot on the heels of our One Tooth Activewear contest, I’ve got yet another giveaway to reveal! We’ve already chosen two more experienced runners to represent FitMKE at the Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Half Marathon this June, but now we’d like to announce another opportunity for the shorter distance runners out there. Specifically, we’re looking for beginning runners to strut their stuff at the Quarter Marathon (that’s 6.55 miles) and the 5K. Have you just started running in the past year or so? Maybe you’ve been quietly logging miles but have never participated in an official race before? Even if you’ve run a race or two, if . . . → Read More: Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Run Giveaway: Quarter Marathon and 5K Edition!

You may have heard a little something about the Icebreaker Indoor Marathon on this site over the past couple of months. Well, we like running in circles so much that we’re excited to get behind the inaugural HEATBREAKER Indoor Half Marathon coming this summer at the Pettit National Ice Center.
I know that everyone is enjoying running outdoors lately during this unseasonably warm winter we’re having but let’s think ahead to a little month called JULY. The temperatures can soar into the upper 90s. And the humidity? Let’s not even start. Now let’s think of how it will be a cool 50 degrees . . . → Read More: From Icebreaker to… Heatbreaker!

Mud Runs are the ‘it’ event right now! If you’re down to get down and dirty on a truly challenging and fun course, there’s another one to put on your radar for this summer: the LoziLu. This year’s event is June 9th at Crystal Ridge Ski Hill in Franklin. This is a girls-only, non-timed event!
There are 10-12 obstacles on the 3 mile course, they are as follows: Climbing, crawling, jumping, balancing, sliding, and scampering. I’m guessing we’ll be doing more than jumping over puddles, but nothing that is designed to hurt us. For example, in the FAQ it states there is NO . . . → Read More: LoziLu – Women’s Mud Run
