Rediscovering Food Journaling

For some people eating healthy comes naturally. Others find it easier to exercise consistently but have a hard time being as diligent with diet and nutrition. I’ve always fallen into the latter category. You’ll have to hold me down to get me to take a rest day from running but when it comes to food, I want it all. There was an interesting article in Time magazine a couple of years ago called “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin.” While I think the title is a little disingenuous, I could totally relate to some of the points discussed. Holiday Cocktail Tips

This is a re-post from a couple of years ago but the topic seems…apt right now.

It’s cocktail season! This time of year is known for indulgence but there are ways to avoid blowing all of your calories on drinks if you plan accordingly and know what to ask for. In general it’s always better to eat your calories rather than drink them because our bodies don’t register fullness from fluids in the same way we do with food. Here are a few helpful tips for navigating those holiday parties:

Reconstructing A Beer Runner – Saying Goodbye to Second Breakfast

I love food. I live to eat and drink and be merry. I feed people as a way to show my love for them. I love to cook. I love to try new foods, strange foods, foods that no one else at the table will touch. It’s part of who I am. I associate food with joy, family, and new experiences. (I’m not saying any of this is a healthy way to look at food, it’s just the way I look at food. It isn’t going to change. I don’t feel the need to change it, either.) In the past, I operated . . . → Read More: Reconstructing A Beer Runner – Saying Goodbye to Second Breakfast

Work out to Eat? Eat to work out?

Some people exercise in an attempt to lose weight. Some people do so simply to stay healthy and fit or because they love the way it makes them feel. And then there are those who work out because of a llittle something called guilt. We feel guilty about eating whatever-kind-of-food-comes-on-a-stick this year at the State Fair so we hit the treadmill or the elliptical machine for an hour the next morning. Or better yet, we work out like mad in advance so we can allow ourselves to enjoy the aforementioned food-on-a-stick. Over the years I’ve found myself falling under . . . → Read More: Work out to Eat? Eat to work out?

Deconstructing Cravings

Fit Milwaukee welcomes Holistic Health Coach Lisa Sarnowski as she fills us in on the origins of food cravings.

When was the last time you had a food craving? Do you love them or loathe the thought?

The body is an amazing machine. It is always there for you, breathing, blinking, pumping blood, digesting food and striving to maintain homeostasis (balance). Do you think this reliable bio-computer is making a mistake by craving certain foods? Of course not! At least I don’t think so.

I also know that cravings are not created due to lack of will-power or . . . → Read More: Deconstructing Cravings

C is for Coffee

All this talk about being calorie-conscious while eating out has got me thinking about another area that tends to trip people up: Coffee drinks. Don’t worry, good old-fashioned black coffee is still calorie-free. I’m talking about something like those awesome blended coffee beverages with the big pile of whipped cream on top. Whether your poison is a cold, iced mocha or a foamy cappuccino keep these tips in mind while ordering if you don’t want to smash your daily calorie budget:

Make the shift to skim milk. As someone who used to be a barista in college, I . . . → Read More: C is for Coffee

Eating Out- A Diet Nightmare?

A lot of people think that eating out means certain death for your diet. As person who considers herself a “foodie” I know it can be hard to balance a love of food with the desire to still fit into your jeans the next day. Of course, maintaining a good exercise regimen can offset occasional splurges but dining out doesn’t always mean that you have to kick good eating eating habits to the curb. Here are a few helpful tips to get you through a restaurant meal without all the guilt while not sacrificing taste:

Detox Diets? A Firsthand Account

Please welcome Karen Gill as she shares with us her experience embarking on a hGC Homeopathic DIet. An hG-WHAT you say? Well read on, my friends:

I have been cooking professionally for almost 6 years and as a hobbyist for over 20. It is simple why I cook. I LOVE FOOD. I am not a total food snob and that can get me into trouble. I know all the right things to eat and how to cook healthy meals, but many times I choose to eat whatever I want; the good, the bad and the downright ugly. . . . → Read More: Detox Diets? Hunger Pains

When it comes to weight loss everyone always says it’s about calories in/calories out. You need to burn more than you eat. If you follow this line of reasoning far enough it can be tempting to keep cutting more and more calories in hopes of producing faster weight loss results. Sounds good, right? Not quite. Restricting your caloric intake too much can actually have more negative effects than positive. Consider this:

Slowed metabolism: The human body is smart. It adapts in order to say alive. If you restrict calories too far the body starts to freak out and . . . → Read More: Hunger Pains
