All Signs Point To Rest

Mondays are tough for me when it comes to running. I run long on Saturdays, and generally run with my Team Challenge teammates on Sundays. This can be anywhere from 2-12 miles, depending on where we are in the season. Yesterday I covered 6.5 miles. That brought my weekend mileage to more than 22 miles on foot, (13 of which were done at what I’ll call a ‘race pace’) plus the 7 mile bike ride I just *had* to take last night.

It seems simple enough: When something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. If you are hurt or sick the best thing you can do for your body is to take some time to heal properly. Ease Up A Bit, Eh?

This time of year it’s harder than ever to squeeze in a workout. In addition to it being freezing outside, there’s tons of shopping, baking, and stressing out to be done. Thinking about diet and exercise can be challenging in the middle of December. I tend to beat myself up a bit if I miss a scheduled run or if I snitch too much cookie dough from the mixing bowl. We all need it. Rest can be easy to overlook when you are busy trying to squeeze workouts in between work, family, chores, and other social obligations. Rest is probably the easiest thing we can do in order to stay healthy- if we can only find the time to slow down and take care of ourselves.
