The big day is coming up: the Milwaukee-area runner’s reunion that we refer to as the Icebreaker Indoor Marathon Relay! Here are a few tips to get you through the day… sort of like an FAQ from what we’ve learned in previous years.

Team Pit Areas: When you arrive at the Pettit Center, once your team captain has picked up your team’s race bag, you will be able to claim a spot for your team along the side of the track. Before the race starts you can place your belongings, warm ups, and water bottles here, and during the race it will serve as your ‘home base’. This is where you can cheer for your team and swap out runners, or you can find another location along the track tag in and out. Although these areas will not be pre-assigned, Fit Milwaukee will have a tent/area roped off for our teams to gather near. We’ll believe we’ll be set up near the northeast corner of the track.

Chip timing: Your chip will be attached to a velcro strap that you will fasten around your ankle. DO NOT wrap the strap around your wrist! Your time will not be recorded this way. During the relay you should switch chips by stepping off the track into the pit area. Please move fully off the track so you won’t get run over by other racers passing by! We’ve found it’s helpful for the person wearing the ankle strap to come fully off the track and place their foot out, while the person about to run grabs the strap from their leg and places it on their own. And, GO!

Lanes: The track at the Pettit has two lanes. If you are a slower runner make sure you keep to the outer lane and always pass on the inside. Doing so will prevent collisions and keep the flow of runners moving without bunching up. Many runners use the term ‘Left’ or ‘Passing’ to indicate to a runner that they’re about to pass. You should always attempt to ‘check your blind spot’ when you are going to pass a slower runner ahead of you.

Dividing laps: This is purely up to the teams to decide how to divvy up the laps. Some four-member teams may simply decide to do four legs of 6 1/2 miles each, while others may break it down further in hopes of being able to run faster for a shorter amount of time. A good option might be to have each person run twice for about 3 1/4 miles each. This way each runner will be able to rest for a fair amount of time before having to run again. Some teams don’t like this choice because it offers too much time between legs to cool down in the 55 degree arena, and choose to run something like 4-10 laps at a time. Of course you can break it down even further but remember if you are a competitive team, you may lose seconds each time you move off to switch the timing chip.

What to Wear? It is approximately 55 degrees inside the Pettit Center, but it’s dry and often feels cooler than that. For the average runner, a long-sleeve shirt, shorts, and a light hat and gloves should be fine. Spectators might want to wear heavy coats, hats and gloves because it can get cold sitting in the stands. Remember, there are no headphones or earbuds allowed on the track.

What to Bring: Please remember that there will be no cups on or near the track or serve water/Powerade in cups during the race. You should bring your own bottle for your hydration needs. Consider keeping water, gels or snacks in your team pit areas so you can refuel in-between turns on the track. Remember, you’ll also want to bring warmer clothes to wear when you are not running. When you’re switching from running to standing around, you’ll wish you were wearing winter coats and mittens like the spectators are!

Lap Counting: Help your teammates out! It can get easy to lose track of how many laps you’ve run amidst all the excitement of race day. A good idea is to have designate a lap counter to back up each of your runners while they are out on the track in case they end up feeling a bit lost. As you near the end of the race, the number of laps you have remaining will be announced so there’s no need to keep an overall count for the team. Some people use their Garmins with their GPS turned off. Some choose to count using rubber bands that they move from one arm to the other. I’ve used the ‘ABC’ method in the past, thinking of a word that starts with each letter as opposed to remember the number you’re on. In any case, it will help everyone on the team if two people are communicating the number of laps until the runner tags out, shouting or holding up how many laps you have remaining when you’re getting ready to make that switch.

For more information, check the race director’s blog: indoormarathon.blogspot.com

Hopefully you found this helpful, and if there are any more questions please ask in the comments and we’ll address them there!

1. How long have you been running?

On and off, but mostly off, since 8th grade. I never really ran competitively until three years ago. I did run a few 5ks and the Shamrock Shuffle in the mid-1990’s, but, I was really, really slow. In 2009, I ran 3 -5K races. In 2010, I ran 5-5K races. In 2011, I stepped it up a bit and ran 3-5K’s, 3 Half Marathons and the Chicago Marathon.

2. If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you run?

My absolutely favorite place to run is Siesta Key Beach. It’s amazing running on the beach. No distance is ever too far there.

3. What other activities do you do to stay in shape?

I do a few P90x dvd’s, ride horses, and occasionally bike to stay in shape.

4. What is your favorite piece of running gear?

My shoes!! I finally got fitted for shoes and what a difference it makes to my feet and my knees. No more blisters.

1. How long have you been running?

I wouldn’t say I have been running as much I would say I started working out about 1.5 years ago. After losing over 100 lbs, I am now able to run again.

No really. Before you guys start, I know what happened at last year’s race. I didn’t run it, but I saw all the tweets coming from the course about the lack of water.
The following may be a bit of a controversial statement:

I am super excited for this year’s Rock ‘N Sole Run at Summerfest!

No really. Before you guys start, I know what happened at last year’s race. I didn’t run it, but I saw all the tweets coming from the course about the lack of water. I read the race recaps about dehydrated runners and lack of general organization. Oh, and I watched the local news reports. I’m painfully aware of how everything went down last year.

So when I got the opportunity to meet with the race’s new management team, I went in with a positive attitude matched with a healthy side of skepticism. Sure, I expected to hear about how the race was going to be totally different this year. I don’t believe anyone would make the water mistake two years in a row. However, I had a bunch of other questions as well. For example:

What about the congestion at the finish line?
What about having actual rock n’ roll at a race called Rock ‘N Sole?
What perks are they going to add in order to bring back all the people who swore NEVER AGAIN?

I have to say I was impressed with the answers I got. I also appreciate the fact that they took the time to meet with people from the local running community to open a direct line of communication as to what people are wanting out of this event. So without further ado let me give you the general rundown on what I think will be most important to all of you who may want to participate.

First, get this part out of the way: WATER WILL BE PLENTIFUL! The half marathon will have 10, count them, TEN aid stations along the course as well as 5 misting stations to keep you cool.

Now that we’ve got that part settled, I was excited to hear that in addition to the half marathon, there will be a quarter marathon to replace the 10K (that’s 6.55 miles) and they’ll also be introducing a 5K. I love the fact that shorter-distance runners will be given the opportunity to participate as well. As for the course, the two longer race routes will still take runners across the Hoan Bridge and back (along with a new, less congested turnaround point) while the 5K will take participants just to the top of the bridge before coming down again.

ENTERTAINMENT. Yep, we’ll get our rock n’ roll. There will be 15-20 entertainment acts acts along the course, including local bands, school bands and cheerleading squads. The acts are yet to be announced but I think this is something a race of this size and caliber really needs and it will only make running 3, 6 or 13 miles a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

NEW FINISH AREA. To clear up any problems with congestion, the finish line has been moved to the south Summerfest entrance gate to provide a wider, more comfortable finishing area for all the runners, along with a larger space for spectators. There will also be live music at the post-race party and a special VIP area complete with free parking, private massages and other neat perks like a post-race brunch and beverages- including beer!

PACERS. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they are adding pace groups to this year’s race. I know so many first-time half marathoners who chose this event last year and having a pacer who is experienced at completing the distance in a certain time window can be very helpful- whether you’re a first-timer or a more experienced runner trying to run a PR.

MEDALS. We all know that one of the best parts of finishing races is the bling. Medals will be awarded for all three distances as well as free general admission to Summerfest for any day in the festival. And for those of you who enjoy an extra challenge, if you register and complete the Madison Mini Marathon on August 18th, you’ll receive an ADDITIONAL snazzy medal. (Can you guess what is on my to-do list now?)

These are major points that stuck out to convince me into signing up this year. I’ve felt strongly for a while that Milwaukee really needs another big, successful running event like this one and it seems that the 2012 race is on the right track to be just that. With the addition things like seeded corral starts, a two-day health and fitness expo and a pre-race pasta dinner I’m hoping that this is the year Rock ‘N Sole starts becoming a Milwaukee tradition.

What do you guys think? Are you ready to let bygones be bygones and give Rock ‘N Sole another shot?

One thing I tend to hear a lot from runners of every level is “I wish I had a running buddy or a group to run with!” I’ve been lucky enough to find a core group of friends that I really enjoy training with but I also remember how long I ran by myself before finding them. Running with a group is great because the time seems to fly by when you have people to chat with and push you along. Plus, you’ll be less likely to bail on a run if you know you have friends waiting for you. Accountability!

Recently I came across The Milwaukee Running Group. They just got started a couple of months ago but already have regular runs throughout the week at various places around the city. I met up with a few runners from the group yesterday at Alterra for a 5-mile lakefront run and I’m hoping to come back for more. There are runners of all levels and paces in this group so a lot of times they’ll break off into smaller groups or pairs according to pace. Still, everyone meets up at the end for high fives and a stretch.

The Milwaukee Running Group has a page on Meetup.com where they arrange all of their group runs. Right now they are asking a small fee of $5 a year to join up. You can check out their group on Facebook as well. If you’re looking for some friendly company and encouragement while you run, this is a great place to start.

“I’m a loner, Dottie. A rebel.”

-Pee Wee Herman

I used to pride myself on the fact that I “taught myself to run”. It really wasn’t a choice I made to train alone. I just didn’t have any friends and family who were interested in it. Sure, I got a lot of support and bit of admiration throughout my early training, but there was always an underlying feeling of, “She’s a little bit crazy, right?” I remember my very first 5K back in September 2008. My family dropped me off at the start and I had no idea what to do with myself for the half hour before the race began. I fiddled with my race bib, stretched out my calves a half dozen times and pretended to be really interested in my ipod. The race itself was a great experience but looking around me I saw all these people who knew each other and I wasn’t one of them.

The next spring I ran a few more 5Ks and my first 10K. My family had other plans during the 10K so I drove myself to the race, ran it, and drove home again with little fanfare. I was The Lone Runner but I was also getting good at it. Every weekend I was adding another mile onto my Saturday runs until I got up to the magical number 13. A half marathon! On my own! I was so proud but I still felt like I was floating along the edges of a running community and had no idea how to connect with it.

Then came the summer where everything changed.

I often pinpoint it down to when I met Annie on Twitter, but there were many other factors at play as well. There were the Badgerland Striders and their wonderful marathon buildup runs. This was also the summer that Dailymile kind of exploded. Everywhere I looked there were people wanting to meet, connect, and share their running and fitness experiences. I found myself going from,“What do I talk about on a long run with strangers?” to “Who can I talk to about running next?” This was something very out of character for me.

This past weekend I ran my first 50 mile ultramarathon. When I first signed up, I knew I had my spectacularly awesome buddy, Krista, to run the race with but I never expected to have a “crew” along the course. Honestly, when a race is going to be 10 to 12 hours long, how could I expect anyone to give up their Saturday to cheer for that amount of time? When I committed to the race I planned to take advantage of the drop bags system and have everything I needed left at various aid stations for me- gels, salt, snacks, extra shoes, socks and such. But then I found out that Amy and Annie were wanting to not only crew for us but get up at 2:30AM to drive me out to the start. At each aid station more and more friends joined the group until we had a whole cheering section at the finish.

The Lone Runner is no more!

I still love solo running. I ran one of my marathons this year alone and had a fantastic time and a PR to boot. But I also ran a trail race with four fantastic friends and crossed the finish line with arms linked Red Rover style. It used to kind of bug me when I would hear someone say “I couldn’t have done this race without you!” because I would feel like that person was diminishing their own capability. I see now that while I may have the ability to complete distances alone, the presence of a running buddy (or four!), a race crew, or a whole finish line party can make the whole experience, well, an experience. It’s not that I couldn’t do the race without them, but they definitely made the whole thing easier and overall, more special. I’m not saying I’ll never find myself alone at a starting line ever again. Sometimes it feels good to strike out on your own and quietly accomplish new things. But I’m more appreciative than I’ve ever been to have the support of good friends.

If you’re running a marathon this fall you’re probably still at the peak of your training schedule, but it’s not too soon to think about what you might want to sign up for once the leaves turn and the cold weather running tights start to emerge from the closet.

When I think about fall races I think about 5Ks, Turkey Trots and other “fun” runs. It’s time to step back and reward yourself after a summer of hard training in pursuit of a PR or a new distance goal. Anyway, I thought I’d take a look around and compile a list of upcoming races to help you guys as you try to fill out your fall schedules. Many of these are races I’ve done myself and others are events I’ve heard good things about. If any of you have other recommendations for other events taking place in the Milwaukee area, let us know in the comments!

Sometimes I think I’m invincible. Well not really immortal, but I have this “thing” where when it comes to something physical, I see no reason why I can’t learn to defeat it. I always tell people that I became a long distance runner partly because I once tried to jog around the park and failed miserably. It gave me something to focus on and conquer. But truthfully my desire to destroy goes back further than that.

I auditioned to be on the pom squad in 7th grade and didn’t make it. I was crushed. However, I was so determined to make it on the team that over the next year I taped every cheerleading and and dance team championship on ESPN I could find. I spent countless hours studying moves and choreographing routines in my basement and in 8th grade not only did I make the squad but I also choreographed the routine that won us first place in a regional competition.

I decided to study dance in college despite never having taken a ballet class. Sure I was a cheerleader. I also went to an arts-based school and participated in musical theatre, but I didn’t TRAIN at a studio for years the way many of my college classmates did. Even so I wanted to transform myself into a modern dancer in the likes of the great Martha Graham. Because I started training much later than others I struggled with technique. However I was natural performer so I used this to my advantage. I soaked up every performance I could attend, read every book on modern dance I could find in the library and stayed late in the studio at night to practice. (I know, cue the Flashdance music!) On an open stage night my freshman year, I choreographed and performed a solo in an attempt to draw attention to myself. It worked. After that I clawed my way from a very beginner class to being asked to perform in concert after concert by my junior and senior years.

I do not give up.

So when I find myself faced with a daunting task like running 26, 31, or even 50 miles, I don’t see any reason why I can’t do it. Maybe it’s crazy to think like that or maybe, just maybe, it’s something amazing. Part of it is just being stubborn but really, barring major injury I never see any reason why I can’t at least finish a race. I’m not talking about winning or even setting personal records- there have been many races where I’ve tried to beat a certain time and fallen short. But I never once thought I couldn’t finish. When I ran Dances with Dirt this past weekend on a treacherous, hilly course, it took us nearly seven hours. The night before? I was excited but not nervous. “We’ll get there when we get there,” was our attitude.

So as I dive into 50 mile training and I stare at training runs of 28, 30 and 32 on my calendar am I scared? That’s not the right word for it. I am ecstatic. I cannot wait to focus, tackle and defeat this latest distance. I know that if I train right and am smart about it, that 50 is just another number. It may take me all darn day but I’ll get there when I get there.

What about you? Do you have a story of determination?

As a competitive runner for almost 25 years, including more than 20 marathons and the Hawaii Ironman Championship, I wish I had discovered Pilates long ago. After constantly suffering from foot injuries, tight hamstrings and even a surgery, I had to stop running. However, after my Pilates training, I was surprised at how easy it was to run and race again. My flexibility and running posture improved as did my breathing, and I haven’t experienced any injuries since. Now that the weather in Wisconsin is getting warmer, I hear many of my clients say they are hitting the pavement and picking up running again. Here’s what runners should know about how Pilates can help your running performance:

Top reasons runners don’t do Pilates.

I hear many people say there’s not time for anything else outside of running, especially if you’re following a strict training routine. I also hear runners say that Pilates won’t improve their time. Last, runners are a tough breed and when they feel pain, instead of stopping, they will run through the pain in hopes of it going away.

Benefits of Pilates for runners.

Pilates will loosen your tight muscles and prevent injuries. Pilates exercises are done in a way that balances your muscles, especially those that are chronically tight when you run; hamstrings, quads, IT bands, calves and lower back. At the same time, Pilates increases flexibility, improves your stride length and strengthens your core. After I completed my Pilates training, my core was stronger, therefore, my body functioned efficiently for the first time the rest and running became easier.

Getting started.

I tell my running friends to come in for a few classes because you can strength train at the same time that you’re stretching. With the new arrival of CoreAlign to the studio and the warmer weather, this is a great time for runners to add Pilates or CoreAlign into their training.

To help get you started, The Lift Pilates Studio is offering a free 30-minute CoreAlign session by appointment or a free Monday Mat class at 12:30pm if you mention that you saw this article on FitMilwaukee.com. There is limited availability (but plenty of room for friends) so please contact Rachel at rachel@theliftpilates.com to reserve your spot before June 30th!
